Thesouthwesterncoastalregionhasahumidmildmarineclimate.SeawindsthatblowinlandfromthewestarewarmedbyacurrentofwarmwaterthatflowsthroughthePacificOcean.Asaresult,wintertemperaturesaverageabovefreezingandsummersaremild.Thesewarmwesternwindsalsocarrymoisturefromtheocean.

Inlandfromthecoast,thewindsfromthePacificmeetthemountainbarriersofthecoastalrangesandtheRockyMountains.Astheyrisetocrossthemountains,thewindsarecooled,andtheirmoisturebeginstofallasrain.Onsomeofthewesternslopesalmost200inches(500cm)ofrainfalleachyear.

MorethanhalfofBritishColumbiaisheavilyforested.Onmountainslopesthatreceiveplentifulrainfall,hugeDouglasfirsriseintoweringcolumns.Theseforestgiantsoftengrowtobeasmuchas300feet(90m)tall,withdiametersupto10feet(3m).MorelumberisproducedfromthesetreesthanfromanyotherkindoftreeinNorthAmerica.Hemlock,redcedar,andbalsamfirareamongtheothertreesfoundinBritishColumbia.
